Rays Swimming Companions

Rays are one of the marine species you will certainly want to meet up with when you take a cruise in French Polynesia and go for a swim in one of our lagoons. In some islands they have indeed become a major attraction.

There are three ray species in Polynesia.

The most frequent are the gray ones, gentle and curious creatures. Indeed it is not uncommon to have them approach boats or swimmers, notably in the spots most frequented by humans, from whom they have got used to extracting some dainty morsels to eat. Rays are carnivorous but harmless. Swimmers can appreciate the silky quality of their skin without fear when they come to be stroked along their soft, waving wings.

Leopard rays with their spotted skins and Manta rays are wilder than their gray cousins
but no less impressive.
Polynesian waters are a favorite home for them for they offer all that a ray could look for – warm waters, limited number of visitors, plankton in abundance and safety.

Indeed, the place of rays in Polynesia is very much in the lagoon rather than on your plate…
Not foreign to their extreme inoffensiveness.

For, even if rays are armed with a barb at the end of the tails, they would use them only if manifestly attacked. No attacks have been reported in Polynesia. It would seem that we bipeds and these “birds of the sea” have reached a common understanding where mutual interests have been found…
