French Polynesia More than 1,5OO Mollusk Species

600 million years ago, before there were fish and long before there were humans, mollusks made their appearance. So if you come to Polynesia, you have every chance of meeting up with specimens that bear witness to this long history of our planet…

Over time, Man learned to appropriate these gifts of nature for his own use. They took many forms - necklaces, bracelets, tools, ceremonial objects, musical instruments and vases. Some species were also used as a medium for trade exchange and of course, we shouldn’t forget they were a well-appreciated food. The 17th century saw their utilitarian uses decline but at the same time it was the start of collections. At first it was a hobby reserved for the privileged - kings, aristocrats or wealthy merchants - but later the idea spread to those with lesser means. Today it is relatively easy to assemble a good collection, either by collecting them yourself or exchanging or buying from specialist dealers. It has become a real occupation for quite a number of enthusiasts. Whether it’s your passion or whether you’re an amateur, you will certainly come across some of these prehistoric specimens when you cruise in our waters.

In fact more than 1,500 marine species have been recorded in French Polynesia and offer great potential. But it is recommended that they be collected with responsibility. In many places, notably on the beaches, you will find already empty shells. There’s really no reason to look for the living animals.
In addition, be aware that certain of these animals could spoil your stay. Be vigilant when handling cone shells (some can even be lethal), stonefish and sea urchins. So take care: don’t be too greedy and don’t abuse these gifts of nature.
